Sisters Francina and Roderica James Open The Cochrane House, Detroit’s Newest Black-Owned B&B

Two sisters are turning hospitality into a family legacy. Francina and Roderica James have opened The Cochrane House, the newest Black-owned bed-and-breakfast in their hometown of Detroit — and it’s already making waves for its style, warmth, and community-driven mission.

A Dream Born in Detroit

Located in the heart of Detroit, The Cochrane House combines historic charm with modern luxury. The sisters, both proud Detroit natives, say their mission was simple: to create a welcoming space that celebrates the city’s rich culture while offering visitors a one-of-a-kind stay.

“This was about more than opening a business,” Francina shared in an interview. “It’s about investing in our community and creating a space that feels like home.”

What Makes The Cochrane House Special?

Housed in a beautifully restored historic building, The Cochrane House offers guests a boutique experience with curated interiors, locally inspired design, and personalized service. Each room is designed to reflect Detroit’s unique artistic and musical heritage — from Motown vibes to contemporary art pieces.

Guests can also enjoy gourmet breakfasts, private events, and curated cultural experiences that spotlight Detroit’s thriving arts and food scene.

A Big Win for Representation

As one of the few Black-owned B&Bs in the city, The Cochrane House isn’t just a business — it’s a movement. The sisters say they hope their venture inspires other entrepreneurs, especially women and people of color, to pursue ownership and build generational wealth.

“Representation matters,” Roderica said. “We want young Black girls to see this and know that they can create something beautiful in their own communities.”

Why It’s Making Headlines

Detroit has long been a hub for culture, history, and entrepreneurship, and The Cochrane House adds another reason for travelers to explore the city. From intimate rooms and modern amenities to a focus on authentic Detroit hospitality, this B&B is designed for guests who want more than just a place to sleep — they want a story.
